Radiology services at the hospital provide all routine x-rays for the Hospital and for the General Practitioners in the town. CT, Ultrasound and Barium examinations are also available.
A Laboratory service is provided by Canterbury Health Laboratories and available on site. The service includes both Hospital requirements and General Practitioner requests for tests. Much of the testing is actually carried out at the base laboratory but essential service for acute hospital admissions are provided on site. Blood transfusion service is also available.
The District Nursing services are available every day for long and short term care for patients at home. This service is for patients who require nursing care at a level greater than the Home Based Support services are able to provide. IV therapy at home can be arranged for some patients as an alternative to hospital care while undergoing IV therapy. Palliative care nursing support at home is also included in this service.
Elderly care is provided for with the Assessment, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service and the best option for care is decided through this assessment process. The assessment services put in place supports which are required to keep people in their own home, as this is what is required by most elderly folk. If continuing to live in their own home is unsafe, then a range of care providers within the area provide rest home or hospital care for the elderly. Tuarangi Home is available for continuing care for the elderly and is a hospital within Rural Health Services.
Specialist General Medical care is available mostly on an acute admission basis for inpatient or day patient care. Where tertiary level specialist intervention is required then the patient is transferred to Christchurch Hospital which is a tertiary level hospital.
Palliative Care is also provided in ensuite rooms with facilities for family and friends.
Surgical
Inpatient and Day Patient planned operations are available of a general
nature under the public health system.
As well as planned surgery the hospital also admits patients for a large range of acute surgical conditions.
The hospital has three Specialist General Surgeons to provide the surgical services 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
If the nature of your condition is serious and requires more advanced surgical intervention then referral to the tertiary hospital will be arranged.
Operations routinely performed at Ashburton are listed below. View our People page to see a list of Consultants.

Acute Surgical Services
Surgical
assessments for planned surgery in the public health service are carried
out in the Outpatients Department during normal office hours.
Referral to these services is through your regular General Practitioner.
Inpatient or Day Patient is available for surgical, gynaecological and medical admissions. The type of stay is dependent upon the the reason for your admission. Currently 60% of all planned Surgical Operations only require a day stay.
Allied Health Services (Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Language Therapy and Dietetics) are available during Inpatient care.
This area of home care service is in two sections, Personal care and Home Help. Personal care is provided to support older persons and those recently discharged from hospital to care for themselves at home. Home Help is assisting the same groups with looking after their homes to a standard which they would normally manage if they were able to do this work themselves. Frequently persons at home have both services. The services are accessed by referral from your General Practitioner or other Health Professional. Government assistance is provided in most cases or private care if preferred.
Meals on Wheels are available by referral from your GP, District Nurse or other Health Professional. You just need to ask about your individual requirements and you will be assessed to establish your needs. The meals are available five days a week and in some cases frozen meals are available. These are helpful for rural people where access on a daily basis is difficult.
The following Clinical Nurse Specialists provide assessment on an outpatient basis and group education sessions on a regular basis: Diabetes, Continence, Stoma, Cardiac, Asthma. Please phone 03 307 8465 for more information about an individual service and clinic appointment times.
Consultation by one of our General Consultants or by a Visiting Consultant is by appointment upon referral from your General Practitioner.
