Social workers have a departmental structure at Burwood Hospital, which includes a Senior Social Worker and Secretary/Receptionist. The small team of social workers have responsibilities in the following areas:
In-patient related work takes up most time, however outpatient follow-up and/or pre-admission can take considerable time also. Practical advocacy is balanced with adjustment and loss advice, and counselling. Although not yet compulsory in New Zealand, registration under the Social Work Registration Act, and membership of the Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers, are both fostered and encouraged.

Speech Language Therapy also provides services to the Burwood Assistive Technology Centre, located in the Allan Bean Centre, Burwood Hospital. This service assesses individuals with disability eligibility for Ministry of Health and ACC funded assistive technology equipment.
