Welcome to Point of Care Testing (POCT)

Point of Care Testing is defined as:

"Diagnostic testing that is performed near to or at the site of the patient care with the result leading to possible change in the care of the patient". (ISO22870)

POCT has been around for nearly three decades- the first marketable equipment was the Ames glucose meter developed in the 1980's. It is only in the last few years that technology has enabled POCT analysers to be as accurate and precise as laboratory analysers.

These days, the emphasis is as much on the competency of POCT operators as it is on quality assurance.
