Capillary blood collection areas
When performing a capillary collect, use the sides of the thumb or finger. Do not use the pad or the tip. There are many more nerve endings in these areas and it is much more painful for the patient.
Similarly, for infants or neonates where the heel is to be used, please puncture only within the areas designated green in the following diagram:
Do not puncture outside of these areas, as neurological or soft tissue damage may occur.
