Airport Passenger Unwell
An unwell passenger on a flight into Christchurch Airport
last night did not have bird flu.
People are frequently arriving from overseas unwell.
Because of the person’s symptoms and the location from which they arrived, the
diagnosis of bird flu had to be considered.
It is the normal practice for authorities at the airport to discuss the issue
with the Medical Officer of Health or his representative and take appropriate
action.
“As in last night’s case, where it was apparent once the information was
available, that the symptoms were not bird flu, the individual and the other
passengers were able to go on their way,” said Dr Mel Brieseman, Medical Officer
of Health for Canterbury.
Advice was given to the ill passenger to consult their doctor, he said.
“If a diagnosis of bird flu is seriously entertained, the passenger would be
transported to the hospital for further investigation,” said Dr Brieseman.
Ends.
