CDHB Gets Behind City 2 Surf

The Canterbury District Health Board is on target to field one of the largest teams in the City 2 Surf with Pump later this month.

About 350 staff have so far registered for the event on 25 March and it is hoped numbers will reach 500.

Evon Currie, General Manager Population and Public Health, says the CDHB is getting behind the event because it encourages its staff to take part in regular physical activity. “We expect to see a large contingent arriving at the finish line, wearing the CDHB t-shirt.”

Taking part in the City2Surf also helps the CDHB to encourage people to adopt healthier lifestyles.

“There’s a real recognition from the DHB that obesity is a huge threat to the health and well being of the community. It’s about highlighting things that all of us can do to reduce the incidence. Walking is so easy, cheap and can be done with friends.”

“Our role is to improve, facilitate and protect the health and well being of our community. Providing health services is only one part of that”

She says many staff who will take part in the event will continue to exercise after it is over, which should have a positive long term impact on their health. “Even though it’s a one-off event, people do a lot in terms of preparing for it and they keep it up afterwards.”
