Second Confirmed Case of Influenza A (H1N1) in Canterbury

A second case of Influenza A (H1N1) has been confirmed in Canterbury, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in New Zealand to 15.

The seven year old boy is the son of the first Canterbury case.  The 50 year old man was a passenger on Flight NZ5 which arrived in Auckland from Los Angeles early on 31 May 2009.

Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey said, “the family had been isolated at home after the boy’s father was suspected of having Influenza A (H1N1)”.

Dr Humphrey said, “while the boy is sick with influenza symptoms he is not seriously unwell.  He is still at home and like the rest of his family has been given Tamiflu. His father is recovering well and his time in quarantine has ended.”
