Jon G. Allen PhD, holds the
Helen Malsin Palley chair in Mental Health Research, is
professor of Psychiatry in the Menninger Department of
Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of
Medicine and is a senior staff psychologist at The Menninger
Clinic.
Dr. Allen specialises in trauma-related disorders and depression. He has authored and coauthored numerous professional articles and book chapters on trauma-related problems, depression, psychotherapy, hospital treatment, the therapeutic alliance, psychological testing, neuropsychology, and emotion. He is past editor of the Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic, associate editor of the Journal of Trauma and Dissociation, a member of the Editorial Board of Psychiatry, and serves as a reviewer for several professional journals and book publishers. Dr. Allen is the author of Coping with Trauma: Hope through Understanding, 2nd Edition, published in 2005 by American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc. and Coping with Depression, to be offered by the same publisher in early 2006. He is also author of Traumatic Relationships and Serious Mental Disorders (John Wiley & Sons) and coauthor of Restoring Hope and Trust: An Illustrated Guide to Mastering Trauma (Sidran Institute). He is coauthor of Borderline Personality Disorder: Tailoring the Therapy to the Patient and coeditor of Diagnosis and Treatment of Dissociative Disorders and Contemporary Treatment of Psychosis: Healing Relationships in the ‘Decade of the Brain. |

Anthony Bateman MA FRCPsych, is a Visiting Professor in the Psycho-analysis Unit at University College London. He is a Consultant Psych-iatrist and Psychotherapist and Honorary Senior Lecturer at University College and Royal Free Medical Schools, Barnet, Enfield, and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust, and St Ann's Hospital, London. He is also a Visiting Consultant at the Menninger Clinic, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston Texas and a Clinical Tutor at Barnet, Enfield & Haringey Mental Health Care Trust. In collaboration with Peter Fonagy he has developed and manualised an innovative treatment for personality disorder (Mentalisation Based Treatment - MBT), trained clinicians in its implementation and subjected the treatment to clinical trials and is now investigating the effective elements of treatment. He supervises treatment in three replication sites –(the UK, Holland, and Norway and also leads research into local counselling services in primary care in conjunction with local GPs, studying the interaction of personality disorder on outcome of brief therapy for anxiety and depression. He has published numerous chapters and articles and has authored or edited several books. His most recent books include Psychotherapy for Borderline Personality Disorder: Mentalization Based Treatment (with P. Fonagy – 2004, OUP), Integration in psychotherapy: models and methods (with J. Holmes – 2002, OUP) and Introduction to Psychotherapy - an outline of psychodynamic principles and practice (with D. Brown & J. Pedder – 2001, Routledge). |

Peter Fonagy PhD FBA, is Freud Memorial Professor of Psychoanalysis and Director of the Sub-Department of Clinical Health Psychology at University College London. He is Chief Executive at the Anna Freud Centre, London. He also chairs the Research Committee of the International Psychoanalytic Association, and the Fellowship of the British Academy. He is a clinical psychologist and a training and supervising analyst in the British Psycho-Analytical Society in child and adult analysis. His clinical interests include issues of borderline psychopathology, violence and early attachment relationships. His work attempts to integrate empirical research with psychoanalytic theory. He has published over 200 chapters and articles and has authored or edited several books. His most recent books include Attachment Theory and Psychoanalysis (published 2001 by Other Press), What Works For Whom? A Critical Review of Treatments for Children and Adolescents (with M.
