News & Events BFHI Accreditation
May 2003 Rangiora Hospital along with Burwood Birthing Unit and Lincoln Maternity Hospital recently gained accreditation as a "Baby Friendly Hospital". This award was presented at a ceremony at Christchurch Women's Hospital on Friday the 23rd of May 2003 by Steve Chadwick, MP for Rotorua. Rangiora Hospital has a comprehensive folder in each mothers room with breast feeding information. Rangiora Hospital gained re-certification BFHI on 7th April 2006 and 7th April 2009. The "BFHI" is a
joint strategy of World Health Organisation and UNICEF aiming at creating
institutions in which maternity services provide and adopt practices
known to promote feeding. To gain accreditation the hospital had
to achieve 75% or more in all categories.

Renovations In 2010, the conversion of the sunroom of the old nursery into a new mothers' TV lounge was completed. Friends of Rangiora Hospital purchased new sunblinds, two new lounge suites and side tables, as well as new carpet which is much appreciated. Other community donations have enabled table lamps and light shades to be purchased. In 2009-2010, all seven of the mothers' bedrooms were redecorated, painted, new wall vinyl, new art works, notice boards as well as new bed throws, duvet cases and tri-pillow covers. The old wardrobes were removed and replaced with a second locker to allow more space in each room. In March 2006, the mothers' bathrooms were renovated utilising the space with two ensuite bathrooms with toilet/shower/basin and one larger separate toilet. This project was made possible by a very generous donation received from a local gentleman, as well as funds raised by FORH at Spring Fete 18 September 2006. This Fete was to celebrate 80 years since the official opening of Rangiora Hospital. Hyperemesis Rehydration Service at Rangiora Hospital Hyperemesis Gravidarum is a condition of pregnancy affecting approximately 1:500 women. In some cases, the nausea and vomiting can be sufficiently severe to cause electrolyte imbalance, with resulting liver and kidney tissue necrosis. Women in North Canterbury are now being offered a Rehydration Service at Rangiora Hospital. Women are able to attend Rangiora Hospital as a day patient, Monday to Friday, 7.00am-4.00pm and receive IV hydration, in an attempt to keep women from requiring hospital admission to Christchurch Women's Hospital. When a woman is initially admitted to the Gynaecology Unit at Christchurch Women's Hospital, a full medical assessment will identify the suitability for access to this service. The women will receive the same hydration regime as previously during her admission and education on self-cares will continue. Each woman will see the Dietician while she is an inpatient at CWH and will be followed up at Rangiora Hospital. Check out the Hyperemesis Project |
