Haematology Outpatients                            Photo of Outpatient's office

The Outpatient department is located in the Canterbury Health Laboratory Building on the corner of Hagley Avenue and Tuam Street.
Referrals to this service are predominantly sent from General Practitioners, however a referral may also be made when patients are discharged from hospital and need to be seen by a Haematologist as part of their continuing care.

 Clinic Hours

The department is open from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.                                                               Nurse Helen treating a patient
Haematology Consultants have  outpatient clinics every week-day and the Haematology registered nurse is available to perform minor procedures and answer patient queries.

What to bring with you

Cancelling your appointment

If you are unable to keep your appointment, please advise the Outpatient receptionist by calling 03 364-0384. The Consultants clinics are always full so advising us as soon as possible allows other patients to be seen.

What will happen at the clinic?

On arrival, please check in with the Outpatient receptionist. Patients are usually required to have a blood test before their appointment so allow at least 1/2 hour before your appointment for processing.  A blood test form will already be at the Blood Test Centre.  We try to ensure that you are seen as near to your appointment time as possible, however sometimes there are unavoidable delays.  If you are concerned about the delay, please check with a staff member.  The hospital has an appointment system so arriving earlier may not mean you are seen any sooner.  Occasionally you may be required to have other blood tests, x-rays or other tests.  This means that you may have to spend longer at the hospital.

When you see the doctor

Ask the doctor to explain anything that you don't understand and discuss anything that is worrying you.  You will have any proposed treatment clearly explained to you, including risks involved in that treatment and any alternatives, before you decide whether to agree to it.  You may also be asked to be involved in a clinical trial and this will also be clearly explained to you.
Occasionally you may not be seen by your usual consultant but by another doctor who works for them.
On leaving, please make another appointment with the receptionist or advise her that the doctor has said you don't need any further appointments.

Parking

There is 90 minute free car parking outside the Canterbury Health Laboratory building.  If you are having a blood transfusion or other treatment in the Haematology Day Ward, there is a car park building on the corner of Antigua Street and Tuam Street.
