Haemostasis is the branch of Haematology that deals with the treatment of patients with bleeding and clotting disorders.
Most of the referrals and queries are from hospital wards that have newly diagnosed Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) patients, although referrals also come
from General Practitioners.
People with haemophilia require life-long monitoring and are
usually referred to the service as infants.
The Haemostasis nurses manage patients with bleeding disorders and those who require anti-coagulation. They also develop protocols for bleeding disorder and anti-coagulant patients prior to surgery and check haemophiliacs' Factor levels during the post-operative stage. The service is actively involved in clinical trials of new therapeutic drugs and coagulation protein concentrates. The service also provides a comprehensive haemophilia genetic service.
We are located next to the Blood Test Centre in the Canterbury Health Laboratory
building (opposite the Hospital).
See Location map.
The Haemostasis clinic is open from 7.30am to 5pm, although a nurse is available for haemophilia patients 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
