Orthopaedic Surgery

The Orthopaedic Surgery Department is situated on the 3rd Floor, Parkside East, Christchurch Hospital, this area consists of the Academic Department, and Wards 18 and 19 including the Trauma Unit with a total of approximately 56 beds, catering for approximately 3000 admissions per year.

The Outpatient Department is situated on the Ground Floor, and has access to the Emergency Department. Outpatient consultations number approximately 36,000 per year made up from referrals from Emergency Department, the wards and GP’s.

All Trauma Surgery is carried out at Christchurch Hospital in a designated Orthopaedic Theatre, and Elective Surgery is carried out at Burwood Hospital where there are 3 theatres and two wards with a total of 56 beds. One of the wards concentrates on orthogeriatric rehabilitation. Outpatient facilities are also available at Burwood Hospital with approximately 1,000 patients per year.

The Orthopaedic Service is involved with undergraduate and postgraduate education and is approved by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons for advanced training in orthopaedics.

Academic activities include a Journal Club, Clinical Meetings, X-ray sessions and Pathology tutorials.

Subspecialties include paediatrics, spine, hands, rheumatoid surgery and oncology.
