REGISTRARS IN BURWOOD SPINAL UNIT AND BRAIN INJURY
REHABILITATION SERVICE
These services are based at Burwood Hospital in Christchurch. Burwood Hospital is a rehabilitation-focussed facility approximately 15 km from the centre of the city.
There are two registrar positions in these areas, one of which is usually filled by an advanced trainee for the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine.
The registrars join the teams of the Spinal Unit (three consultants) and the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service (two consultants). Under the consultant supervision, the registrars are responsible for the day to day clinical assessment and management of patients with spinal cord and brain injuries, including young stroke patients between ages 15 and 65 years. As part of their duties, registrars work a 1:4 on call roster.
The positions provide in depth clinical exposure to acute management and rehabilitation as well as long term follow up for spinal cord injury patients and rehabilitation for traumatic brain injury and stroke patients. Training is provided through NZAFRM training programme.
Registrars seeking these positions should have completed a minimum of three years basic medical or surgical training. Preference is given to candidates accepted into the training programme of the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine. Positions commence in December each year.
