Maori Health - Hospital Chaplains

You will find our Chaplains office at Christchurch Hospital. They are very busy and always in demand and work from all the hospitals within the Canterbury region, on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Chaplains respect a persons beliefs, culture and privacy. They seek to promote the dignity and value of each person and provide spiritual guidance to people of all races and religions.

Chaplains provide spiritual support and encouragement. They offer prayers for those who are in need of comfort before or after an operation, the blessing of wards or rooms after a death, a shoulder to cry on and someone to be there in times of stress, uncertainty and sorrow.

Their mahi covers a wide range of support. They are great listeners for our Turoro, whanau and staff. Much of their mahi is like social work as they are there to manaki the well-being of the whole person and their whaanau not just the spiritual side of wellbeing.

The Chaplains make sure that our Turoro are treated right and that, their needs are met. If someone is in hospital and they have no whanau around them, our Chaplains engage with their networks in the community so that our Turoro will have whanau with them. Usually someone from the same iwi provides a spiritual, emotional, physical and whaanau connection with the Turoro.

Chaplains also support staff with tikanga concerning our whanau in hospital providing education regarding the placing of equipment, kai, beding and other necessities used for our Turoro.
